Following the devastating Maui Fires, CITYPAK has taken action by sending 500 PAKs to the island. Together with local friends of CITYPAK and organizations including Maui Rescue Mission, World Central Kitchen, and Makali'i Ohana, the PAKs are being distributed to displaced residents most in need. Aloha Air and Royal Hawaiian Movers were crucial in helping CITYPAK overcome logistical challenges in transporting the PAKs from the Mainland.
THANK YOU to all involved. As Maui embarks on a lengthy path to recovery, CITYPAK remains dedicated to aiding in these efforts.
]]>For CITYPAK’s Fall 2023 Los Angeles Distribution Initiative, which begins mid-August and continues through October, CITYPAK is partnering with local organization The People Concern to distribute the bulk of the PAKS - reaching those most in need via hosted events and street outreach programs throughout the city.
Distribution Events
For The People Concern event, 250 CITYPAKs will be distributed at the launch event, with 350 additional CITYPAKs will be distributed in the weeks and months to follow via The People Concern’s multiple centers, teams, and programs that serve L.A. Area neighbors in need year-round.
Additional organizations distributing CITYPAKs in Los Angeles County this fall include Venice Family Clinic, and Sahaba Initiative Inc. (with support from Islamic Relief Fund USA).
Since being launched in 2012 by music industry executive Ron Kaplan in partnership with Samsonite/High Sierra, CITYPAK has provided almost 100,000 specially designed backpacks to those without homes in more than 160 cities across the U.S. and around the world. Most recently, as part of the organization’s expansion into disaster relief and in international reach, CITYPAK partnered with The Salvation Army’s International Emergency Services department to provide 1000 CITYPAKs to assist Ukrainian refugees in Poland. This year in the U.S, CITYPAK and Islamic Relief USA partner for IRUSA’s “Day of Dignity” initiative for the sixth consecutive year: 6000+ PAKs in 2023, and 24,000 PAKs total, distributed nationwide - and counting!
The inspiration for CITYPAK came from Kaplan’s desire to make life a little easier for those living on the streets of his native Chicago. Ten years ago he partnered with High Sierra, a division of Samsonite, to design and produce a versatile, high-quality backpack to meet the unique needs of the homeless. Including an integrated poncho, reflectors, anti-theft loops and special pockets to protect personal items from the elements, the innovative packs provide added safety, security and mobility for the user. While High Sierra produces the packs at a special low cost, CITYPAK must raise money through donations to cover production. The SBK Foundation, founded by the Kaplan family, has provided program funding along with other philanthropic institutions, private donors and individuals.
With CITYPAK now in its 11th year, Kaplan is focused on continuing to expand the footprint for the non-profit, bringing the unique benefits of custom-designed backpacks to disenfranchised, displaced and unhoused individuals across the U.S. and around the world.
“Our focus is to assist as many people as we can, regardless of who they are, what they look like or where they come from,” he said. “We want to thank everyone who has helped along the way, from our corporate and community partners to all the individual donors, and let them know they are changing lives for the better, one backpack at a time.

Distribution Events
CITYPAK was launched in 2012 by music industry executive and Reliant Talent Agent Ron Kaplan, to provide custom-designed backpacks to those who are unhoused. The organization has since provided over 95,000 backpacks in more than 150 cities across the U.S. and around the world. The innovative packs feature an integrated poncho, reflectors, anti-theft loops, and special pockets to protect personal items from the elements, providing added safety, security, and mobility for the user.
While CITYPAK manufacturing partner High Sierra (Samsonite) provides the PAKs at cost, CITYPAK must raise money through donations to cover production and shipping. CITYPAK’s ongoing success is made possible by SBK Foundation (Selma Breskin Kaplan Foundation), founded by the Kaplan family and CITYPAK’s biggest donor to date, and other philanthropic institutions, private donors, and individuals.
“I’m so grateful for this opportunity for Reliant Talent and CITYPAK to make a meaningful impact on the Nashville community, and am humbled to be partnering with some amazing local organizations that are doing important work year-round to serve neighbors in need,” said Kaplan. “By providing custom-designed backpacks to the un-housed, we hope to improve the quality of life for those in need, and to promote dignity in homelessness - one PAK at a time.”
Among the volunteers signed up to distribute homeless packs, are some of the staff members from Reliant Talent.

In 2022, we marked our 10-YEAR Anniversary with events in LA and Toronto. Just as importantly, in the midst of inflation, a national mental health crisis, a growing level of violence and crime affecting the unhoused, and humanitarian disasters, we pledged to continue to provide custom-made backpacks to those experiencing homelessness or in housing transition in 2023 and beyond.
As we close out 2022, we're reflecting on what a year it's been! Together we accomplished so many wonderful things. We celebrated our 10-year anniversary, commemorated the occasion with distribution events with long-term partners (Los Angeles LGBT Center, YP2F, Safe Place for Youth, and Homeless Connect Toronto - we see you!), AND hit our goal of distributing 100,000 PAKs globally.
However, nothing in our 10-year history would have been possible without the support of our partners and their communities; together we've continued to strive for dignity in homelessness. Thank YOU for everything. We wish you all the best in the coming year!

]]>I’m Ron Kaplan, and I grew up outside of Chicago. I had a very fortunate upbringing, but it was one that came with the responsibility of giving back. When my mother passed I started managing her foundation - the Selma Breskin Kaplan (SBK) Foundation - but soon realized that I didn’t want to just write checks. I felt very disconnected just handing out money through the foundation and I started looking at the ways we could provide more value and support to homeless communities within the Chicago area.
Why did you start CITYPAK?
I started realizing that through access to the SBK Foundation’s resources I had the ability to make a real impact and I wanted to create a balance of giving (as opposed to just taking). It took some time for the idea for CITYPAK to really form, but once it did I realized the potential it had for creating real support to those experiencing homelessness. In fact, CITYPAK is in part funded by the SBK Foundation and the SBK Foundation is currently in the process of finding other inspirational charities we can fund that will help drive real change in communities.
Where did the idea for the PAKs come from?
Through my work with the SBK Foundation I was often visiting different homeless shelters or churches, and I was also seeing people on the streets of Chicago who were carrying their belongings around in garbage or plastic bags. It was clear to me that people needed a better means for carrying their belongings. One such organization I met with was the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, and rather than just giving them money I thought to myself “what else can i do?”. This is in part how the idea for CITYPAK was born, but it truly came to life when rather serendipitously I met the owner of High Sierra at one of my concerts.
What problem is CITYPAK trying to help solve?
With our PAKs we are trying to make life on the streets for those experiencing homelessness just that little bit easier. I realize that many older homeless people are carrying a lot of personal items, and often in shopping carts, whereas the youth homeless are more apt to be lighter on their feet; they use bikes for example, and our quality, durable and sturdy PAKS are really good for both purposes.
Tell us how you came to partner with High Sierra?
I met the owner of High Sierra at a concert. We had a brief conversation where I pitched the idea and asked if he’d be interested in partnering with me. Fast forward to a few weeks later and I was in his office, and he was showing me pictures of WW2 soldiers in the rain and asked if their PAKs were similar to what I envisioned. We agreed that day to work together - he saw the concept for CITYPAK as being of value and having impact. The funny story of it all, when we finally put the order in for the first 2000 PAKS he called me and said I’m selling my company to Samsonite. I thought we’d have the 2000 PAKS and that’d be it. I waited for nearly 4 months not knowing the answer. Then I got a call from the CEO of Samsonite who loved the idea, they flew out to Chicago and we met in person to formalize how we could grow the partnership. We’ve now been working together for almost 10 years.
You’ve distributed more than 88,000 CITYPAKs in over 168 cities. Throughout all of these distributions, what’s stuck most with you?
Being from Chicago something that has really stuck with me is the validation I felt when we reached our milestone of distributing nearly 5000 PAKS in the city. I would see the PAKs on the streets and I always go up and ask the PAK recipient about their experience with the PAK and if they have any feedback. A common theme I’ve noticed is that many of the people I’ve spoken to are highly educated, but have had a twist in their life that put them where they were. Being able to provide real support to people in this situation is a great feeling. In fact, giving creates such a great experience for you personally, in that it creates happiness that you’re making a difference.
We’re coming up on 10 Years of CITYPAK. How did you get here?
As soon as we opened the website we started getting hits, through word of mouth and from the organizations we were partnering with. We’ve successfully maintained our relationship with High Sierra, they’ve been instrumental in helping us keep inventory stocked and getting the PAKs to those who need them the most. Outside of that, the rest has been ensuring we continue to build upon our success and we’re now starting to look at what the next 10 years might look like for CITYPAK.
What does success as a charity look like for CITYPAKs next 10 years?
I’d like grow CITYPAK beyond servicing the homeless and into a source for FEMA or other disaster relief organizations when people are temporarily homeless. In another 10 years, I’d like to see us reach the milestone of having distributed over 200,000 PAKS, and we’d like to be actively working with sponsorship partners who can help make that happen, not just in the US but globally.]]>23525 Civic Center Way, Malibu

]]>I just wanted to take a minute to show my appreciation for what you guys are doing. I was homeless for 5 years and I recieved one of your bookbags towards the end of that first year. I was 19 on the streets of venice beach and i went to safe place for youth was where I got it. A few months after I got my citypak I was hiking the mountains north of LA.
I had lost my footing and slid down the mountain on the backpack. I almost went off the cliff and into a stream. When I was done slidding the backpack had gotten pretty beat up but still in good condition and my ukelele was still attached and not broken. I went down to the stream and played ukelele appreciating life.
A few days later I was in Hollywood at Griffith park I bought sewing supplys ripped up some clothes and fixed my pack. That Citypak lasted me a good 4 years of being homeless and i put it through hell it has carried everything you could ever imagine including a wood folding table once. And that backpack has saved my life a couple times. I still have that backpack attached are pictures of mine. I just wanted to tell everyone involved in the citypak project your doing an amazing thing.
When your homeless your backpack is your home and the consideration you have put into designing this is perfect. I would never change the design this really is the best bag for homeless people. Thank you for what youve done and keep up the great work.
